Weekly Update, 18th – 22nd September

Working with colleagues at Jisc on Analytics Labs and DfE Labs, and also the startup for the new governance structure for the Community Dashboards. I’m building some visualisations of the type and provenance of the data sources we’ve used for dashboards over the past few years, which is a bit “meta” but a lot of fun.

Writing a response to a parliamentary consultation on data-driven approaches to curriculum planning in the HE, FE and Skills sectors. I’m doing this with one of our clients, pointing out some areas where we need more public open data, and some areas where we need more join-up between government departments, all based on practical experiences over the past two years with a lot of case studies. Hopefully as this is itself an evidence-based approach it’ll have some traction..?

Collaborating with the other partners at Cetis LLP on another of our consultancy offerings we’ll be promoting in the coming year, which is in research data management. We’ve already got a beta cloud based solution for structured datasets (trunkdb.com) and are looking at how we serve the broader needs of researchers, from basic file sharing through to semantically-aware solutions such as BRISSKIT and ChemBioHub. Still lots of options to consider at this stage, but between the partners we already know a great deal about RDM from a range of discipline perspectives.

Booking attendance at an event on the Co-Operative University. I remember a long time ago colleagues from the University of Lincoln investigating this; maybe now the time is right for initiatives in this space. Really looking forward to this one!

Harvesting chillies and sweet peppers from the greenhouse, and keeping up the salad supply. Dealing with slugs – I’ve already lost a few peppers to the slimy buggers. I’ve started moving out finished tomato plants, and getting some winter veggies ready.

Playing Mass Effect: 2 on the Xbox. I really liked Andromeda, so I was wondering what long-term fans of the series were on about when they ranked this the best of the series. Not really seeing it so far, but I’ll persevere for a bit.

Reading Firefall by Peter Watts. Still on the second part, Echopraxia. Not finding it exactly a quick read this one.

Watching series 2 of The Expanse on Netflix.

In case you don’t know me, I’m a consultant and partner in Cetis LLP, specialising in BI/analytics, open source software, and technology discovery and pre-procurement. Always interested in new clients, so feel free to get in touch.
